WHAT IS ANIMAL CRUELTY?
There are many forms of animal cruelty that range from simple, correctable violations to crimes that
are violent in nature. Some of the anti-cruelty laws that Humane Officers come across every day are:
  • Keeping a dog tethered without food, water, or shelter.
  • Neglecting an animal when it is in need of medical attention. When an  animal is ill or injured it
must be seen by a licensed veterinarian because the animal cannot tend to its injuries like people.
  • Keeping animals confined to an enclosed area. If an animal must be placed in a small crate or
kennel, the owner or care taker must make sure that the animal receives adequate exercise.
These types of violations are correctable and can be resolved through educating the pet owner on proper
care of their pet.

Humane Officers also regularly investigate other crimes against
animals that are considered violent and are not just an issue of
education. Such crimes are:
  • Dog fighting
  • Cock fighting
  • Hoarding
  • Bestiality
  • Intentional neglect and abuse
  • Malicious torturing, mutilating, maiming and/or killing
