This program will bring a unique opportunity to the inmates who participate. A special 12 week
certification program developed by PAL and A.C.T. (Animal Care Technologies) will allow inmate
participants to earn certificates in Animal Shelter Management/operations, Dog Bite Prevention,
Kennel Management & Veterinary Assistant. In addition, a certificate in dog training will be
awarded to those who complete the training program and successfully take part in training one of
the 5 dogs that are going in each week for training sessions.
All 5 of the dogs in the program have been rescued and are learning basic/intermediate obedience.
All but two of them have been adopted and their new parents opted to leave them in the program
until they completed their training!

Prison PAL begins a new program at the Federal Correctional Institution in Victorville 09/10/09

Update December 3, 2009
All of the dogs below graduated from the FCI prison program!
The inmate trainers graduated as well, earning their certificates in Animal Shelter
Management/operations, Dog Bite Prevention, Kennel Management & Veterinary Assistant as well as
Basic Dog Training Obedience.
The day was filled with mixed emotions as the guys said good-bye to there first group of dogs.
Knowing another group was coming soon helped take away the sting.
One of the most gratifying things for PAL staff was the inmate speeches, one told of how this
program helped him to feel "human" again and for the 2 hours while he was in class he didn't feel like
a prisoner, another talked of mutual respect that he had learned through the program and was
amazed that the racial barriers that are prevalent in the prison are broken down when they walk in
the door for this program. "We can all work together in here, it's not that way out on the yard."
We are so proud of the guys in this program, all 20 of them are going on to Veterinarian Assistant
classes and Dog Training Mentor class. 25 new inmates join the program in January, wow has this
program been successful!
We'll post pictures of the graduation as soon as we can!
